“We would be looking at widespread 3 to 4 and a half inches of rain and I just don’t see that happening right now. Newport News is a partner in a regional flood monitoring and forecasting project called StormSense One of many benefits of a stream and tidal water level. “If we were looking to trying to get the rivers at major flood stage, this would be a rain event that everybody would recognize as problematic,” Schlag said. Normal precipitation is about 1.5 inches for April and almost 2 inches in May. Jamestown received almost 4.5 inches of precipitation in April and about 3.9 inches of rain this month so far, according to measurements taken at the North Dakota State Hospital. The Climate Prediction Center has been calling for a warmer and drier-than-normal weather pattern beginning in June, Schlag said. “ … We are going to be getting rains, but it looks more seasonally normal.” “The reservoirs are full, the rivers are running,” he said. *Although it did not actually flood along most of the James River, the concept is exactly the same.JAMESTOWN – The overall flood outlook along the James River is at historically normal levels of risk right now even with the amount of precipitation the Jamestown area has received, according to Allen Schlag, hydrologist with the National Weather Service in Bismarck. Geological Survey gages rivers and it is a topic worth studying in the Earth’s Environmental Systems course. Upstream gage data make it possible to estimate both water height and the arrival time of high water, potentially averting dangerous situations. But the surge from a storm through a drainage basin is relatively systematic and predictable. Why is the shape similar and what controls rate at which the hydrograph drops off?įloods can wreak havoc on riverfront communities, especially if they arrive unannounced. So what’s the average velocity of this pulse rolling down the river? After the river crested, all 4 hydrographs follow a similar trajectory with the flow dropping off exponentially over time. The river distance between Clifton Forge and Richmond is ~350 km and it took the flood wave* nearly three days (65 hours actually) to traverse that distance.

With a peak flow of 8,350 cfs in Richmond, the James did not reach its bank full discharge, but was well above the long term median flow. In summer, the water level in this stream gets low, and stocking is suspended until the creek.
